How to create an amazing CV in 8 simple steps

There's nothing like learning from the specialists.
After an interview with a Portuguese Adecco manager, here's the super summary of what you should do to create your very own, amazing and effective CV.
Step by step so nobody gets lost.

A CV is one of the main components of your personal brand, especially if your on the job hunting process.

Step 01 - 1 Company > 1 CV.
So the first step is realizing that your CV has to be customized to the company and position you're applying to.
There's none of that "anything will do" attitude.
You should only apply to the positions you have the necessary qualifications and experience for. Less than that you are wasting their - and your - time.

The trick is in discovering the job vacancies available because they are not all on the newspapers and
job sites. But that's a different post...

Step 02 - Create a Mega CV
that you will never send anyone but that compiles in a single document all of your
- professional experience
- training
- internships
- volunteer experiences
- skills and competences
- important milestones
- crowns, knighthoods, enthronements, and so on...

Every time you do something professionally relevant, this is the document you should update.
This Mega CV will work as a basis for the copy-paste.

Step 03 - Acquiring a target.
Know the company are you applying to and the position and go into 007 mode.
Try to gather as much information as possible, learning all there is to learn about your  target.

We're not talking about just carefully reading the job description (that too of course, but it's not enough): you have to learn the company's values, read press clippings , social responsibility actions, ... anything that can help you make a difference with your application.

Try to include some of the information you learned - keywords - on your presentation letter and your CV. Anything to make an impact.

Step 04 - Copy-paste
So now you just have to copy-paste the perfect CV using:

- the job offer details
- the data you collected on the company
- the data from your Mega CV

The goal here is to create a custom made CV that perfectly answers to what was asked for on job description A for company B and in 2 pages or less.
Make it easy to read - without the need for a magnifying glass - and visually appealing.

Step 05 - The Layout
This decision should be based on your personal taste and, more importantly, on what you learned about the company you're applying to.
A creative CV may not always be the best answer, but you can always customize it a little, in terms of fonts and colors to better suit the company's look.
Everything depends on who is going to read your CV

If you choose to be creative, don't over do it: too many different fonts and sizes on the same document can make it cheesy.

Step 06 - Review & Proofread.
Around 5 times should do it, just to make sure there are no mistakes or typos.
Give to a family member or a friend. A fresh pair of eyes are always helpful.

Step 07 - Are you sending your CV by e-mail?
If you are, please pay attention to the e-mail address you are using.
It is also part of your personal brand and it's the first thing the recruiter will see. blacksheep@hotmail.com is not a professional sounding e-mail (unless you are in the farming industry)

Step 08 - Are you going in for an interview?
If you are, don't forget to:

- go through your CV before the interview (to refresh your memory);
- print a copy and take it with you;
- write additional notes - things that didn't fit on the CV - but that could be relevant to mention on the interview.

Step 09 - Did you find this post useful? Share it!
And thanks for your comments.
Good luck!
